The mobile Internet is today’s main driver of growth in time spent online, consumers are increasingly using their smartphones for Internet access. The rapid consumer adaptation creates opportunities for businesses to engage with consumers. Gaining deep insight into consumer’s usage patterns provides marketers the base and starting point of offering products, services as well as information to satisfy true customer demands.
According to Google Recent Research, more consumers use a mobile phone (feature phone or smartphone) than a computer (desktop or laptop) across all five countries – US, UK, Germany, France and Japan.
The study found that globally, smartphones are on the rise. The UK had the highest concentration with 45%, up 15% from the first half of 2011. The US and France is looking at 38%, Germany is 23% and Japan is the lowest with only 17%.

The other interesting finding is about the demographics of smartphone owners, they are shifting too – more women are using smartphones, particularly in Germany and Japan.


The smartphone user growth will continue, and it has been estimated that nearly 150 million consumer in the USA will own a smartphone by year 2015. Marketers, however, are always looking for better ways to gather information about target markets and increase product sales.
